What is a CMS system? - quick definition

A web content management system Modern is a tool designed to allow you to create, manage, and optimize the digital experience of your customers.

More specifically, a CMS is a software application that allows users to collaborate in the creation, editing, and production of digital content: web pages, blog posts, etc.

CMS systems are evolving from simple solutions that help deliver digital content to powerful systems that are essential for managing a global digital experience across multiple channels, such as email, mobile applications, social networks, social networks, websites, and more.

However, in a user-centric world with many different devices, this is not enough. Digital marketing has evolved and now focuses more deeply on the customer experience, while also incorporating mobile applications, and more.

All of this depends on a web content management system, which separates content management from content presentation.

What is the difference between a CMS and a WCM system?

The terms “content management system” and “web content management system” (WCM or WCMS) are often interchangeable, and there is no clear industry definition to distinguish one from the other.

The term CMS tends to mean creating, editing, and managing content, while the term WCM implies all of this, as well as the actual management of websites.

However, when a provider prefers one term or another doesn't tell you what you need to know, you need to “look under the hood” of the solution to find out what it really offers.

Essential functionalities of a CMS solution

Important features of a content management solution include:

  1. Content Management 🧑 ‍ 🎨: create, edit, publish, and manage web content (including text, images, video, and audio)

  1. Introduction 📱 : Customers are moving from one device to another, and no marketing organization can afford to manually optimize every blog post or catalog page in formats that are suitable for laptops, tablets, and smartphones. You need to be able to create the content once and then let the CMS system automate the presentation based on the device.

  1. Integration 🔗 : Is the solution comprehensive, or does it use APIs to connect your content to other applications, such as CRM (customer relationship management) and ERP (enterprise resource planning) solutions and critical external platforms, like Facebook? Are the APIs you need available? (ask us! 😎)

  1. Trade 🛍 : A critical facet of integration is the ability to connect a personalized marketing presentation to your digital commerce systems. You can fully control the “customer journey”!

  1. Personalization 👌 : The solution can address relevant content to unique visitors based on their personality or location, or even individually, based on their past interactions with your brand.

  1. Analytical data 📈: You offer content, but does anyone read it? And if so, what does he do next? Demand visibility into performance so you can optimize your efforts and define the return on investment of your solution.

  1. Governance 👑 : Keep strict control over posts and changes to your content.

  1. Multilingual support 🇫🇷🇺🇸: Translate your content into other languages, and publish it all over the world.

  1. Scalability/Performance/Stability 📊: evolve your solution from a technical point of view in line with your scaling.

  1. Training/supplier support : CMS solutions are becoming more and more complex and promise ever more spectacular results; however, most teams need help to gain mastery of advanced features. (and we can help you with that 😎)
